Galena Country, Illinois
I recently came across an article in a magazine, AAA Midwest Traveler, courtesy of my momma, that has a blurb about a small town in Illinois ~ Galena ~ that’s about 6 ½ hours from Kansas City, Missouri, 8 hours from Springfield, Missouri and 5 ½ hours from St. Louis, Missouri. Settled along the Illinois / Iowa border, Galena Country offers all sorts of wintertime adventures: snow skiing or boarding (whichever you prefer), cross-country skiing and snowshoeing (if that’s your thing), horse drawn sleigh rides, and of course shopping, dining and an array of cozy beds and breakfasts for your overnight stay.
I absolutely love Colorado, but Galena County looks like a solid weekend getaway that is much closer to home, complete with spirits and libations. You can enjoy a bourbon at Blaum Brothers Distilling Co., some craft beers at Pecatonica Beer Company, and a wine tasting at Rocky Waters Vineyard and Winery – something for everyone. Then of course, no small-town weekend getaway would be complete without a ghost tour. Please note, The Haunted Galena Tour Company’s 90-minute walking tour runs April through October, but they have other festivities occurring throughout the year. This time of year (February), however, you can definitely plan for some solid playtime on the slopes at Chestnut Mountain Resort.
Safe Travels and Have Fun!
